When it comes to sex (and sex toys), a good lubricant is almost always a necessity. And i’m always on the lookout for something a bit different, especially if it has the possibility of further enhancing sex or masturbation.

The Butters is something I had heard about, and read about from other bloggers, but I had yet to try out this lube that was being touted as ‘The best lube you’ll ever use!’ (according to the side of the tub). Peepshow Toys were kind enough to send me a tub of the Raw Honey X Cocoa Butter lube for review, and I was genuinely quite thrilled and excited to be trying it. So let’s get straight down to it?

First Impressions

The Butters is an incredibly versatile product; it’s not just for personal lubrication! It can be used as a body moisturiser, a shaving cream, a make-up remover, a softening hair conditioner, a beard conditioner… just to name a few of the uses! So that immediately sets this apart from any other lubricant I have ever tried.

The Raw Honey X Cocoa Butter lubricant is made from all natural ingredients (Aloe Vera, Shea/Cocoa Butter, Grape Seed/Olive Oils, Honey, Arrowroot and Apple Cider Vinegar). It contains no scents dyes, sugar, glycerin, sweeteners, parabens, silicones, alcohol, gluten, phthalates. This lube has been designed with everybody and every body in mind. Suitable for use during sex, with toys, on your own. It’s great for vaginal use and anal use, and is even safe for oral use as well. As the name would imply, it has a thick, luxurious buttery texture, that melts down quickly. For $14, you get a decent sized 8 oz jar.

In Use

The Butters definitely took a while to get used too. It is very different to any lube I have used before. Truth be told, it’s not my favourite lube, and I generally tend to not reach for it during sex/masturbation. But that’s not because it’s a bad lube. It just requires a bit more ‘effort’ to get it to work with me, and most of the time, I’m just impatient and reach for the sliquid as it’s easier.

For solo play (masturbation), the Butters does indeed create a decent about of slipperiness, but I honestly find in this instance, it just dries out far too quickly for me. I do have to regularly reapply, far more often than I would with a standard water-based lube. The upside here though, is I don’t feel ‘sticky’ like I do with regular lube. In fact, the skin on my shaft feels delightfully smooth and conditioned!

For use with toys, I found The Butters worked a bit better, especially with items made from glass and metal. Things stayed slicker for longer here, although reapplication was again, still necessary for me; but thankfully it was no more than I would have to normally apply when using a water-based lubricant for anal. I still believe that my silicone/hybrid lubes that I use do last a little bit longer than The Butters, and again, this is a personal preference, I do still prefer to use those.

When it comes to intercourse, again, the Butters does indeed work well for anal sex. I still get it drying out (as to be expected), but again, it’s not as quickly as with water-based lubes. I’ve also noted there has been less irritation (certain lubes can give me a sort of ‘burning’ sensation) but i’ve not experienced that with this. So this is the only reason I would really keep this around for anal sex. As for use with oral sex, The Butters doesn’t taste horrible. It does have a slightly buttery taste, and as this one has Honey inside, it does have a slight sweetness. However it can get a bit too much, and can leave the inside of your mouth feeling coated if ingested in large quantities. So I would definitely suggest going in sparingly if using during oral.

As a moisturiser, I love this. I can rub this over myself after a bath or shower, and it absorbs into my skin really easily, doesn’t leave a greasy residue and everything feels soft and smooth. The Butters doesn’t contain any synthetic scents, so the only scent you are getting is the sort of nutty scent from the cocoa butter, and perhaps a slight note of the vinegar. It’s certainly not unpleasant (at least, I don’t think it is), but if you are adverse to the slightly more natural scents of things like oils and butters, you may not get on well with it.

I have also used it as a make-up remover, and it did a really good job of removing stubborn waterproof eye make-up. I’ve even used a little bit in my beard as well to keep the hairs nice and soft. Personally, I can see myself using it more for this, rather than as a personal lubricant. The Butters is not compatible with latex, so that’s something to bear in mind as well.

Summary

It can be really hard to find a good lube, that’s safe for all orifices and isn’t filled with all sorts of synthetic and nasty chemicals. I applaud Jerome Stuart Nichols for creating a brand of natural products like this. There are certainly plenty of folks out there who have used this as a lubricant and have raved about it (you can read some of these here, here, here and here). For me, the ‘lubricant’ side of things didn’t always hit the right mark. It’s a good price point, it feels luxurious and is a multi-purpose product. It definitely deserves good marks. I just personally won’t be reaching for it the next time i’m in the bedroom. But it will be sitting on my dressing table, and will be getting regular use in other ways. So it’s not all bad.
