The ever-talented Mr Will from his House of Thrills has nominated me for a Real Neat Blog award. The idea is to answer a few questions about blogging, nominate a few other bloggers that you like and respect – it’s like a huge cyber hug full of warmth and fuzziness. I would like to thank Mr Will for his nomination – my answers to the questions are below, as well as my nominations – you should totally check them all out because they are all awesome.
1. Why did you start blogging?
The honest answer? Well I started it late one evening, back on the 19th May 2014 (yes, we are coming up to our first anniversary – look out for our giveaway next week!). As a member of the Lovehoney community, I occasionally received products for free through their tester program, and a blog seemed like a great way to expand my reviews and hopefully reach a new audience. I never actually expected anyone else to find it or even read it. So the success that we have had with the blog has come as a complete surprise – yet I am so very grateful and thankful that we have achieved what we have in a short space of time.
2. If your site had a goal, what would it be? How do you feel you’re doing with that goal, right now? How do you feel you’ve done with that goal over all?
I guess the main goal is just to provide a new point of view in the sometimes confusing world of sex toys. Lots of bloggers are female, and I figured we could do with more male perspectives. There are some awesome male bloggers out there already (Ruffled Sheets, Incendiare’s Reviews, He’s Naked to name just a few) but the majority are female. Not that there is absolutely anything wrong with that at all – it’s just I think guys still find it a little awkward to talk about sex toys with anyone, so finding a blog run by some dudes can only help reassure them that it’s OK to be curious about toys, and understanding what’s good/bad and just generally help educate people. I think we’ve done alright so far – I mean, our first couple of months blogging, we were only reaching a very small audience (sub 200 people a month). Now we’re reaching the dizzying heights (after just a year, mind) of 20,000 plus – I definitely think we are reaching a good audience, and it shows in the emails I receive.
3. How has blogging influenced your life?
It’s certainly helped me be a lot more ‘adventurous’ – not that I wasn’t in the first place, but now I have people sending me products to try out and review, i’m finding myself a lot more open to new experiences. Although this does now mean that sex toys occupy almost any and every available corner, and most of them, despite being tucked away in a nice storage drawer, still find themselves covered in Elphie’s fur – so when it comes to taking photos for the blog, I have to spend some time trying to edit out the odd hair and bit of fluff.
4. What is your favorite part of blogging?
For me, it’s just knowing that we are trying to help people make better decisions about the toys they purchase. Not just from a pleasure perspective, but trying to get people to pay more attention to the materials if the products they buy, and how that can possibly affect them. I also get a kick out of meeting and speaking to people through social media. I was late setting up a twitter account for the blog, but we’re now at over 700 followers, and again – I never dreamed we would get that many, let alone continually see it grow, month by month. It makes me feel real special!
5. Are you kinky? How did you come to this conclusion?
Gee, that’s a tough one – because I guess it would depend on what your definition of ‘kinky’ is. I mean, for me, growing up, if you liked being spanked in the bedroom, that was considered ‘kinky’. Using sex toys was considered ‘kinky’. Anything that doesn’t involve straight-up ordinary sex could have been considered ‘kinky’. So if you base it off that older, broader definition – then yeah, i’m kinky! Nowadays, I just consider myself someone with a large sexual appetite who knows what he likes.
6. What do you want to be when you grow up?
This is always one of those awkward questions, because i’m 29 years old and I still don’t know what I should be doing with myself. When I was younger, I used to want to be a train. That’s right, a train. I used to be obsessed with Thomas the Tank Engine when I was knee-high to a grasshopper, and for many years, I clung onto that dream, until my mother had to remind me it was a physical impossibility that I could ever be a train. She said I could drive one, but I can’t be one. Since then, I have been completely disillusioned with life and everything.
OK, not really – but to be honest, I’m in a really happy place right now, and if it continues for the foreseeable future, then i’ll continue to be really happy.
7. What is the most important thing about you that you want everyone to know?
I like to feel special, and loved. So if you come to the blog, it would make me so happy if you could leave a comment, or send me a message, or follow me on Twitter – I need constant validation because otherwise, how will I know how good I am?
OK for real though, one important thing I want everyone to know, is that I love my friends, my family, my husband and my little pug. I would go to the ends of the earth for them. Without them, I am nothing.
OK, so for my nominations….
